I was given exceptional access at the Funk Parade Kickoff Party held at DC’s Howard Theatre on March 17, 2015. Great access offers great angles that provide the opportunity for great photos… you be the judge.
The Funk Parade celebrates the thriving soul of DC’s musical heritage deeply rooted in funk and flavored by the area’s African, African-American, Caribbean, South American, Island Peoples and other cultures. Evolving from its many roots and the politco-social influences that have been felt so strongly in the nation’s capital, today’s Funk scene in DC is vibrant and found in many forms: go-go, soul, hip-hop, Jazz, Afro-funk, Latin-funk and other variants.
This year’s 2nd Funk Parade will including a day festival, the participatory parade and an evening music festival at numerous venues around Washington’s famed U Street Corridor (aka, the Black Broadway of DC).
In addition to celebrating the Woman of Funk and getting everyone motivated for the planning and preparation needed to pull off such a large event, last week’s party also kicked off the Funk Parade’s Indiegogo campaign to raise the funk (and the funds).
